Songs For Selina Cast 2

Songs For Selina: A Music-Themed Film That Reveals the Dark Side of the Recording Industry

The world of music and entertainment is often imagined as glamorous—bright lights, hit songs, and dreams fulfilled on stage. But behind the spotlight lies a more complicated reality. The upcoming independent film Songs For Selina explores that reality, diving into the emotional and professional struggles artists face while navigating the competitive music industry.

Premiering in select cinemas across Ayala Malls beginning March 18, 2026, Songs For Selina arrives at a time when conversations about fairness and exploitation in the music industry are intensifying. Through drama, music, and powerful storytelling, the film examines the price of ambition and the sacrifices artists make while chasing their dreams.

From Pandemic Idea to Passion Project

The story behind Songs For Selina began during the early days of the pandemic in 2019, when R&B singer and producer Jay R started considering a new creative venture.

The spark reportedly came from Jay-R’s father, who encouraged him to pursue filmmaking as his next artistic project. That conversation eventually led to the early stages of pre-production, including a meeting with filmmaker Dean Rosen, who later became the movie’s director. Rosen’s involvement was also strengthened by his father, himself a respected director, immediately after the Filipino film “Quezon’s Game.” Interestingly, Dean also has a role in the film.

What started as a casual idea soon grew into a full-scale film project driven by a shared passion for music, storytelling, and honest conversations about the entertainment industry.

Casting Real-Life Talent

Jay-R cast his wife, singer and performer Mica Javier, in the lead role of Selina, one of the two central characters whose journey anchors the story.

She stars alongside Rachel Coates, who plays Maya, Selina’s musical soulmate and collaborator. Their friendship and partnership form the emotional core of the film.

The cast also features an impressive ensemble from theater, television, and music, including:

  • Rachel Alejandro
  • Audie Gemora
  • Nicole Laurel
  • Leanne Mamonong
  • Gian Magdangal
  • Gabby Padilla
  • Beandetha of Salbakuta
  •      and Jay-R himself.

Their combined stage and music backgrounds bring authenticity to a film that lives and breathes the world of performers.

At its heart, Songs For Selina tells the story of two musical artists whose bond is tested by the harsh realities of the music industry. While the film celebrates creativity and passion, it also sheds light on the exploitative dynamics that can occur behind the scenes.

Jay-R, who serves as executive producer, describes the film as both a love letter and a critique of the industry he has spent decades in.

According to the singer, the goal is to encourage audiences—especially aspiring artists—to be mindful of their choices and motivations.

He explains that the film reminds viewers that not every opportunity is what it appears to be and that success often comes with hidden costs. Staying grounded in one’s values and understanding why one pursues a career in entertainment, he says, is essential to surviving the highs and lows of the industry.

For lead actress and co-producer Mica Javier, the film also reflects the real struggles many performers experience while pursuing their artistic goals.

Having spent much of her life in music and entertainment, she notes that the story resonates deeply with her own journey. The film explores the emotional highs and painful lows that come with chasing dreams—along with the sacrifices that artists often make along the way.

Equally important, she adds, is the opportunity to showcase Filipino creativity to a global audience.

Before its Philippine theatrical release, Songs For Selina had already gained international traction after being picked up in the United States by major streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Tubi.

A Timely Film for the Music Industry

The release of Songs For Selina comes at a moment when the Philippine music industry is actively discussing issues such as artist exploitation, unfair contracts, and sexism.

The timing is especially striking following recent viral revelations from a young female artist who spoke publicly about unfair treatment by record labels. These conversations mirror the themes explored in the film, making its arrival feel both relevant and necessary.

Through its narrative, the movie hopes to spark discussions that could ultimately lead to better protections and fairer treatment for artists.

Songs For Selina is produced by Homeworkz Entertainment and distributed in the Philippines by Black Cap Pictures.

Filipino audiences can catch the film beginning March 18, 2026, in select cinemas located in Ayala Malls.

A Film That Goes Beyond Entertainment

For travelers, culture seekers, and fans of Filipino entertainment, Songs For Selina offers more than just a night at the movies. It provides a rare look into the real stories and hidden struggles behind the music industry, while celebrating the passion that drives artists to create.

As the Philippine entertainment landscape continues to evolve, films like Songs For Selina remind audiences that behind every hit song and dazzling performance lies a human story—one filled with dreams, choices, and the courage to speak the truth.

As for its soundtrack, we await further announcements.
