Marikina’s Double-Decker Resto Is the Ultimate Throwback to Classic American Diners

Yours Truly, with Mac’s Diner Manager, Mr. Rey Soldevillo who was gracious enough to answer a few more queries. My gratitude to Mr. Daniel Eftimoff, and wife, Mac…

Filipinos have long been captivated by Uncle Sam, eagerly soaking up everything from American culture and fashion to entertainment and food. Given the chance, they would snap up American products in a heartbeat. It is no wonder that the mere sight of anything with a hint of American flair can leave Filipinos wide-eyed and enchanted.

And with that premise, bringing a touch of Americana to the Philippines could be a winning idea. If you find yourself longing for a taste of classic American fun in Marikina, make your way to the Riverbanks complex and discover the nostalgic allure of Mac’s Diner.

The diner’s name is a clever nod to Maria Airene Celestin, affectionately known as “Mac.” And with the devoted support of her husband, Daniel Eftimoff, an engineer-turned-chef and restaurateur from Chicago, their dream of opening a diner became a reality.

The diner opened in December of 2024.

Concept and Inspiration:

The idea first took root in the 1800s, but it was between the 1920s and culminated in the 1950s that people truly embraced it, transforming ordinary vehicles into rolling works of art. Cars, trains, and just about anything on wheels became diners, each with its own flair. But Mac’s Diner is more contemporary, with a 1950s retro vibe.

Ambiance/Art Inspiration of Restaurant Interior:

All-American. A diner in a double-decker bus with a really 50s vibe. Think Grease. Yeah, the movie!

Resto Format:

Dine-in, Delivery (through FB/IG PM orders); Diner opens at 10 am-11 pm

Quirk:

A double-decker bus from Germany, stripped to its frame, and brilliantly reimagined and rebuilt as a vibrant restaurant. For Filipinos, the charm is immediate as it’s recognizably American. Even the ambience and lighting are retro 50s. We encourage you to visit the establishment at night to fully appreciate its aesthetics.

Complementing the diner immediately just outside its dining premises is a bar. On days when the diner is full to the brim, customers are requested to utilize the bar space instead. The diner can accommodate 20+ people, while the bar can seat 40.

The bar is open for events, pay-per-views, and special celebrations. On Sundays, the bar holds acoustic nights.

Specialties

Fish & Chips, Ziti Pasta, Burger, Fries, and Coleslaw combo, et al

Wishing For A Music Renaissance That Evokes The Emotions, And Nuance Of The 70s

As someone who has enjoyed music throughout its many iterations and genre fusions, I find it disheartening that modern music production is so preoccupied with formulaic techniques like loops, audio sampling, overused chord progressions, and clever bassline maneuvers that it has become tedious and uninspired. Include random, strange-sounding soundbytes that serve as rap music samples.

The creative flare and variety are gone. Okay, some may dislike what we’re saying and expressing right now, but as things stand, we don’t owe this generation an explanation for why we don’t love the type of music they listen to and enjoy today. We are not making generalizations. To each their own, I suppose.

For the time being, we commend Asian musicians (including Filipino musicians) and composers who continue to create diverse and nuanced music with flourish. Despite minor parallels and influences from previous artists, the intricacies they incorporate into their ideas and compositions distinguish them as totally their own. That is totally normal but totally ear-candy!

Right now, let’s play A&R (artist and repertoire) for a while. An A&R for the uninitiated is a person in a recording company who scouts for new music, artists, and artistry (genre types et al) that will be the next generation’s zeitgeist. But for this instance, we’re hiring an A&R that has the taste for the 70s brand of musicality but still moving forward with the times.

Let’s make some allowances, shall we?

Some musicians are excellent performers and vocalists but lack the uniqueness to shine on their own. However, other vocalists, such as Bamboo, Jay Durias, and Vince Alaras, can shine with creativity, and the right materials. And shine they did. These people are now etched into music history as one of the few who dared to be different and adventurous!

However, we are thinking of musicians and vocalists who are exceptionally creative, rather than those that simply repeat the original song or the musician’s version. Someone with the courage, and the range to make the music their own. Let us mention a few.

KZ Tandingan

KZ Tandingan’s ability to produce music from a variety of genres and make it her own is quite unique. For example, she competed in China against Jesse J, a well-known American music artist. Adele’s song Rolling In The Deep became her own. She added a completely original rap number. Furthermore, KZ’s vocal nuances are so diverse that they are unlikely to be imitated or parodied from the original. To be honest, this is something that the vast majority of Filipinos excel at.

TJ Monterde

TJ Monterde is another artist who stands out among his peers. He creates original music out of his own creativity. His melody has that 70s spirit and vibe that fits perfectly with the 2000s zeitgeist. His voice, oh his voice has that tonal quality that is totally soulful. TJ Monterde happens to be KZ Tandingan’s spouse. Kindred souls, we guess.

Project: Romeo

For a time, the acoustic genre became a toast in the mid-1990s but has become so stale as some record companies milked it for all its worth during that time. But then again, it seems to be raring for a comeback. This time it’s carrying with it originals that sound and enunciate 70s vibes, a Kundiman flourish, and a somewhat old-fashioned flavor. We’re talking about the duo they call Project: Romeo. Take a listen to their new song called Tugon so you’ll get an idea of what we’re talking about. Moreover, it’s about time that this duo get their fair share of attention from the record industry. Also listen to Ito Lamang, a song that’s eerily influenced by Rey Valera’s Pangako. Hay and Di Tiyak also sounds promising

Bugoy Drilon

Like Jay Durias, Michael Pangilinan, and Vince Alaras, Bugoy Drilon is also one of the best voices around. Given the right project of all-originals, this gentleman will soar. If his Paano Na Kaya is not an indication of what this gentlemen can do, what can’t?

Michael Pangilinan

Michael Pangilinan is another voice with that soulful flourish. He can interpret songs that will pull at your heartstrings much like what TJ Monterde or Bugoy Drilon can do. Listen to his interpretation of South Border’s Rainbow, and see what we mean. But I digress, this gentleman can stand on his own. Funny though how Michael and Bugoy sounds so identical at times. Blame it on BuDaKhel, their trio before they became solo artists.

Christian Bautista

Though always compared to Josh Groban in his early days, Christian Bautista managed to shake off that comparison. Christian, through the years have edged his contemporaries when it comes to projects and albums. Practically speaking, he has such staying power that his voice and project choices may be the sole reasons he continues to persists. He has that kind of voice that evokes raw emotions. Kung Nasaan Ka Man proves this!

Passage

A band that created a name for itself in the 1990s but has since retired, and we’ve heard that a new set of members will join the new roster. Please! Passage, like South Border, Side A, and Freestyle, fought for melodic brilliance over loud headbanging lunacy. No offense. Every genre should be respected while maintaining variety in its delivery. Nuance should reign supreme in today’s manufactured products.

You Won’t See Me Crying remains one of my favorites to this day.

Gary Valenciano

Despite his years in the music business, Mr. Pure Energy never failed to give us original songs of his own making. His compositions, like the one we’re describing earlier, describe him to a T. Though heavily influenced by Western music, Gary Valenciano still gives credence to his Filipino roots.

In Another Lifetime, among others, I always listen when I get the chance. This La Sallian has elevated himself to the ranks of the best OPM performers of all time. We’ve Won! Hail, hail, hail!

Aera-Jayheart Us Tour 2026 Press Conference Concludes October 15, 2025, At The Fired Up Resto, BF Homes, Paranaque

The Aera-Jayheart Press Conference for their upcoming US Tour, coming in 2026, just concluded at the Fired Up! Restaurant recently, last October 15, 2025. Nestled right inside the posh BF Homes Subdivision in Paranaque, the event was attended by the esteemed members of the Philippine entertainment press who witnessed the two acts, Aera and Jayheart, plus his band, perform and give a sampling of what they have to offer.

Unsurprisingly, the event started a bit slow while still awaiting for the rest of the invited press to arrive. With a few teeth-grinding moments to spare, good fortune smiled on us, as all invited press were able to come in safely to the venue just in time, and partake of the fare and the fanfare of the occasion.

The event is generously sponsored by Mr. Edgar Vera Tividad‘s Edren Entertainment LLC in the USA, and represented by Mr. Christopher DelaCruz‘s Onstage Promotions here in the Philippines.

With the entertainment press curious about who these talents are, Aera and Jayheart were able to prove their mettle as established entertainers and gifted vocalists as they sang their hearts out, as requested by the entertainment press themselves present. Mind you, those were just samples. The questions and queries asked were also excellent, given the outstanding responses from both artists, including the producer himself.

Serving as the master of ceremonies is a good friend and associate, ‘the Ambetable’ Mr. Ambet Nabus who gave a flawless handling of the event proceedings. We were impressed!

As of the moment, and as releases from the invited press are slowly coming in, Aera and Jayheart are getting good reviews and very encouraging greetings from friends, the industry, and family. Kudos to both!

Sizzle Feast Marikina: Affordable Pork, Beef, Chicken & Seafood Sizzlers You’ll Crave!

If there’s one thing Marikeños love, it’s a hearty meal that doesn’t break the bank—and this local gem delivers just that. Tucked within the city’s bustling food scene is a restaurant that turns up the heat with its wide range of sizzling favorites—from tender pork and juicy beef to flavorful chicken and fresh seafood—all served hot, tasty, and budget-friendly. Whether you’re craving that signature sizzle and smoke or looking for a comfort meal that satisfies without the guilt of overspending, this spot proves that great taste doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag.

The Sizzling House, as a concept, was founded on a simple goal: to offer an elevated dining experience in every community. They aim to provide the rich flavors, elegant presentation, and genuine service of a premium restaurant, without requiring guests to travel far or spend excessively. What began as a simple concept has become a local favorite, recognized for its ‘Cheap But Great’ philosophy.

Everything about the space was chosen to make things easy for everyone, from the simple layout to the soft colors and comfortable chairs. For their team, it means a place that works well and is easy to use. It means a place where our guests can feel at home, whether they are wearing socks or business clothes.

Concept and Inspiration:

To many, the act of grilling meat is woven deeply into the fabric of Filipino culture. But the practice has long been a tradition in the West, particularly in the United States, as backyard barbecues during spring, summer, and holidays like the Fourth of July. The Sizzling House, therefore, exudes a combo of both Filipino and American concepts.

Ambience/Art Inspiration of Restaurant Interior:

The concept of The Sizzling House began with a personal craving — the owner’s search for a really good meal in the community. After years of traveling to different places and trying countless restaurants, there came a realization: great food — especially a satisfying steak — was often too far away or too expensive for the everyday Filipino.

The Sizzling House was a mission statement in stone and establishment aimed to serve that purpose: Every dish had to be something you’d be proud to serve — flavorful, consistent, and made with care. But at the same time, it had to be accessible — a place where you could enjoy a tender, juicy steak or a sizzling plate of comfort food without breaking your budget or leaving your neighborhood.

The crew, who work tirelessly to bring The Sizzling House to life each day, was instrumental in conceptualizing and developing the interior design concept. These people are the ones who welcome every customer with a smile and take great satisfaction in serving each meal; the space’s simplicity represents their honest, hardworking, and easygoing personalities. The ambience is minimalist. Not too overly fancy, and not too intimidating either.

Resto Format:

Dine-in, Delivery (through FB/IG PM orders)

Quirk:

From the outside, the establishment looks unassuming, but check out their interior, and you’ll be surprised to see and experience an air-conditioned space that can easily accommodate 30 people. Pet-friendly too. It is, after all, a neighborhood resto.

Specialties

Sizzling Szechuan Shrimp, Sizzling Calamares, Spiced Rice, Ribeye Steak

From the Philippines to America, Jayheart and Aera Embark on a US Show Tour with Edren Entertainment LLC come 2026

After Sweetnotes Music’s triumphant tours across the US and Canada, Edren Entertainment LLC is ready to light up the stage again. This time, two electrifying artists unite for a vibrant Pinoy-inspired spectacle. Before the spotlight shines, let’s get to know these performers one by one.

Deserrie Grecia Peliño, or Aera as she’s known today, grew up in a home filled with music and talent. She began singing at the age of four and continued performing throughout college. Her talent, raw energy, and passion helped her face tough times, even when things were difficult for her and her siblings as scholars.

Her triumphs in talent competitions brought more than cheers; they filled her family’s table. Realizing this, Aera decided that venturing overseas as a college freshman, fueled by her talent, determination, and passion, was the right move. There, she joined with the other half of Sweetnotes Music, her beloved ‘Ate Charlotte’.

The connection is evident: Aera is the younger sibling of Charlotte P. Bactong, the other half of the Sweetnotes Music duo.

The experience helped both her and Charlotte grow and improve their skills. Their time there also gave the sisters the chance to help build a permanent home for the Peliño family, ending years of moving from one relative’s house to another.

A CHANCE. A SPRINGBOARD. A CHALLENGE

In 2016, they made their way back to the Philippines, each one lighting up the stage with their own band. Looking back, the Peliño family’s talent feels almost destined, as if music flows through their veins. Whether it is a gift passed down through generations or simply raw passion, their artistry is undeniable.

For those unfamiliar, Aera also took a shot at It’s Showtime’s Tawag Ng Tanghalan. Though she did not make it, the journey was a revelation: sometimes, no matter how hard you try, fate has its own plans. Additionally, Aera continued to pursue her goals and traveled to the Maldives for an additional four years to perform.

By a stroke of luck, Jayheart and his band, The Antidote, happened to be searching for a female vocalist. Thanks to their invitation, Aera not only found a stage to perform on but also a reason to call the island home for the past four years.

But it was in 2024 that Aera was suddenly thrust into the limelight with her rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s  Girls Just Wanna Have Fun with her band The Secret, on a YouTube Video. Much like her sister’s sudden burst of recognition for Sweetnotes Music via livestreaming, Aera is making a name for herself likewise. Her video with her band, recorded at a well-known restobar in General Santos City, rapidly gained widespread attention online.

From that very video, invitations began to pour in for bookings, performances, guestings, and even interviews.

With the similarity in the sisters’ career paths, some may wonder if there was ever competition between them. Though they are alike, they simply enjoy what they do. In the end, their careers are their own private playgrounds.

MEANWHILE, Jayheart himself is no slouch, having honed his skills through sheer determination. His approach to his art is unconventional, almost like method acting for singers. Jayheart insists he fully transforms into the artist he wants to emulate, channeling not just their voice but their very essence.

Yes, his early days were far from smooth. After college, he spent two years in the BPO industry, only to discover it left him unfulfilled. Yet, in the midst of this uncertainty, he crossed paths with the guitarist who would spark the first notes of his musical adventure. Many times, he tried auditioning, but the odds weren’t just in his favor.

When the right doors refused to open, Jayheart built his own and marched boldly toward fresh opportunities. Fueled by this belief, he began sharing videos of himself online, hoping to catch someone’s attention but mainly for his own viewing pleasure later in life, when he can no longer do what he did in his youth.

As mentioned earlier, his singing improved over the years through learning and channeling his favorite artists, including Queen, Scorpions, Michael Jackson, and The Outfield, among others.

As Jayheart pours his heart into every chord, his love for rock, pop rock, and classic rock echoes in each performance. This fiery devotion is what drew Ogie Diaz’s eye on social media, sparking a discovery that stunned everyone, Jayheart most of all. Even now, he can hardly believe his luck, and he is determined not to let the opportunity from Edren Entertainment LLC slip through his fingers.

Seizing this opportunity, he aspires to electrify audiences in the US with his signature sound and unfiltered stage energy. Something he really hoped and dreamt of for a long time and is finally happening.

Jayheart and Aera will be lighting up stages across the US this 2026, brought to you by Edren Entertainment LLC and executive producer Mr. Edgardo Vera Tividad, and Christopher Dela Cruz’s Onstage Promotions. Mark your calendars and join the excitement.

Marikina’s Pasalubong Spots at San Roque— the local lane of treats

J.P. Rizal Street in Barangay San Roque, Marikina, is a small, tasty street where you can buy pasalubong, which are little treats that say “you were here.” Traditional puto and kutsinta from Marikina, small-batch native treats, pandesal and bakeshop gift boxes, and classic carinderia/garage-eatery comfort food can all be found tucked between sari-sari shops and family-run bakeries.

The local rice cakes and nibbles of Marikina have a rich culinary history. Traditional kutsinta and puto, with their distinctive brownish hues from muscovado and atsuete, have been handed down through generations of families in the city. As a result, speciality shops offering these and other goods have sprung up along streets that see a lot of local foot traffic, such as J.P. Rizal in San Roque, creating a convenient one-stop pasalubong strip. Some of Marikina’s most distinctive dishes, according to travel and food journalists who have covered the city’s cuisine, are variations on puto.

Notable shops & stalls you’ll find on J.P. Rizal (San Roque)

Below are representative places that frequent visitors recommend or that have public listings — good starting points when you explore the lane:

  • Aling Remy’s Puto & Kutsinta — a longstanding, iconic maker of Marikina-style puto/kutsinta with listings that place it on J.P. Rizal. Many food guides and directories list it as one of the go-to stalls for local rice cakes. Location.
  • Auntie’s Bakery, Restaurant & More —since 1984, a community bakery with pasalubong goods as well as classic bread, pastry items, and a restaurant in San Roque but located in the Gil Fernando hub has been open. You can still shop for pasalubong and eat here. The place is a little high-end. Location.
  • Snack Wise Delicacies & Pasalubong Center — a larger pasalubong/packaged-sweets shop. Location.
  • Mommy Choleng Pasalubong Store — a smaller family-run pasalubong shop that appears in local social listings. Location.
  • Food lane staple: Goto Garahe nearby — the J.P. Rizal stretch also has well-loved eateries — for example, Goto Garahe (a garage-style goto) is repeatedly mentioned in local press as being located along J.P. Rizal near the pasalubong cluster. These little eateries make the street more than a shopping strip — it’s a place to taste before you buy. Location.

(Note: many stalls are family-run and may move or change hours seasonally; treat shop names/addresses above as reliable starting points but confirm locally if you need exact hours.)

Pasalubong sellers on J.P. Rizal use several common price formats you’ll see across small food shops in Metro Manila:

  1. Per piece — for single items (e.g., single puto or kakanin pieces sold at market counters). Useful if you want to sample.
  2. Per pack / per box — the most common for take-home pasalubong; boxes or trays of puto/kutsinta or assorted kakanin. Local examples show boxes in the PHP ₱100–₱300 range for mixed small boxes depending on quantity and vendor. (Example: travel/food videos and reviews show shops selling mixed puto boxes around ₱120 as a ballpark).
  3. By weight (kilo) — less common for pastries but used sometimes for bulk native delicacies or sweets.
  4. Bundle/combos — bakery + specialty snack packages (e.g., pandesal + jams, box sets) priced as a single bundle.
  5. Custom / made-to-order pricing — for larger quantities (holiday trays, party orders) vendors will quote per order; many family-run shops accept advance orders for bigger batches. Many shops provide phone/Facebook contacts for orders.

Payment methods: Pcash remains king, but many stalls and eateries in the area accept GCash / e-payments or have updated payment options — especially in the last couple of years — so it’s worth asking at each stall. (Some eateries and food features list both cash and GCash as accepted methods.)

How to get to J.P. Rizal (San Roque) — practical directions

J.P. Rizal in San Roque is walkable from several Marikina nodes and well-served by LRT2 + jeepney/bus routes. Here are the main ways visitors get there:

From LRT-2 Santolan Station (recommended if you’re coming by rail)

  • Exit Santolan LRT-Ligaya / San Roque is within walking/taxi distance (many transit guides list Santolan as about a 10-minute walk / short tricycle/jeep/taxi ride to parts of J.P. Rizal). For most convenience take a short tricycle or ride-hail from Santolan to Ligaya beside The Ayala Mall Feliz.

From Marikina Public Market / Marikina Park

  • J.P. Rizal runs parallel to some of the market/food areas; you can walk or ride a jeepney that plies J.P. Rizal particularly jeeps that ply the Pasig-Marikina routes to be found in the Marikina Sports Center sidestreet. The public market is a natural starting point if you want to combine wet-market shopping with pasalubong stops.

By car / ride-hail

  • Plug the specific shop address into your maps app (many shops have Waze/GMaps listings). Parking on a busy stretch can be limited; smaller lots or street parking near eateries may exist but expect to walk a short distance. Snack Wise and other pasalubong centers are listed on map services for driving directions.
Visiting tips and what to buy
  • Best times: early morning to late morning is great for fresh rice cakes and baked goods (many sellers bake early). Avoid the late afternoon rush on market days if you want to browse slowly.
  • Try before you buy: many stalls sell single pieces so you can sample puto, kutsinta, ube halaya, or specialty jellies before buying boxes.
  • Preservation & transport: native rice cakes can be moist — keep them cool and eat within 24–48 hours or refrigerate if you’ll keep them longer. For travel, request airtight boxes or ask for packaging suitable for the trip home.
  • Order ahead for holidays: popular shops often take made-to-order trays and boxes for Christmas/fiestas — call their listed phone/Facebook pages to secure orders. Many family shops advertise contact info on social listings.
  • Cash + GCash: carry small bills for quick buys; have a GCash option ready in case a shop prefers e-payment.

A sample walking route (quick plan)
  1. Start at Santolan LRT-2 → Ligaya (beside Ayala Mall Feliz) short tricycle / 10-minute walk to J.P. Rizal (San Roque).
  2. Walk along J.P. Rizal between barangays San Roque / Calumpang: look for the cluster of small shops and eateries (Aling Remy’s / Auntie’s / Snack Wise are good anchors).
  3. Taste at a garage-style eatery (e.g., Goto Garahe) for a local sit-down breakfast before you buy pasalubong to take home.

J.P. Rizal’s San Roque pasalubong strip is quintessentially local: modest storefronts, family recipes, and friendly sellers who’ve been feeding Marikina for years. You’ll leave with more than snacks — you’ll take home small stories (and perhaps a box of warm puto) that make Marikina memorable.

Best Frozen Online Dessert Shop in Pasig — Order Tiramisu & Cakes from Sassy’s Kitchen for Delivery

Launching a food business presents significant challenges, particularly when partners come from non-culinary backgrounds. For Maryann, an accomplished writer and an experienced ad agency coordinator, and her partner, John Henry, a young but accomplished architect, the early stages have been demanding and occasionally unpredictable.

The partners occasionally took risks, albeit playfully, by doing surprise taste tests with fellow Rochester Condo residents before testing the products themselves. Was it confidence or simply a ‘let’s see what happens’ attitude? Who knows, but the results were a pleasant surprise, even for them, since the testers liked what they had.

Soon after, they tried it out with family members who eagerly joined the taste test, which continued to win rave reviews. Buoyed by this wave of encouragement, the couple pressed ahead with their true plan without delay.

As it happened, their condo unit became the site of their creations, using a battered and overused whisk to whip up the magic. But of course, they’re already investing in automating everything going forward. A case of lightning in a bottle? Looks like it!

They opened their doors on September 1, 2025, just as the -Ber months began to roll in. Their mission is to revive the joy of sharing homemade family desserts during life’s most memorable moments, just as they did with their own families. Despite coming from non-culinary backgrounds, the food-making bug just got to them, we guess. At Sassy’s Kitchen, each day is an invitation to celebrate with lovingly crafted treats, made fresh in their cozy home kitchen.

Maryann and John Henry want to open a real store someday, but for now, Sassy’s Kitchen will keep taking orders and making deliveries.

Concept:

Their concept and vision of homemade desserts are very much rooted in a heartfelt mission: to rekindle the joy of sharing homemade family desserts on life’s most cherished occasions, just as they once did with family. At Sassy’s Kitchen, every day feels like a celebration, where fresh, lovingly crafted treats await in the warmth of our home kitchen.

Quirk:

Sassy’s Kitchen takes its name from their cherished rescue cat, Sassy. While John Henry’s family boasts a baking background, he admits creativity is not his strong suit. Still, their determination to pursue the commissary dream never wavered.

The intention to bring home a present for one’s loved ones is a fundamental aspect of the Filipino travel mentality. Filipinos instinctively pursue that distinctive item that will bring pleasure to their loved ones back home, irrespective of their location, whether it be domestic or international. This demonstrates the Philippines’ enduring significance to every Filipino on a global scale. This is recognized by residents, expatriates, and non-nationals.”
